Final rehearsals are underway as a Wirral-based community theatre company prepares to stage a production of a much-loved award winning musical.
D&S productions are set to stage iconic musical Kinky Boots at The Brindley Theatre in Runcorn from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th October at 7.30pm. The show will be directed for D&S by Donna Dale with musical direction by Craig Price and choreography by Gemma Walker.
Based on the 2005 film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, the musical was adapted by playwright and composer Harvey Fierstein with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. Based on the true story of shoemakers W.J Brooks, Kinky Boots is set in a Northamptonshire shoemakers. When its owner passes away, the factory is inherited by his son Charlie who discovers that it is failing, with little hope of being saved. A chance meeting with a drag queen called Lola and her amazing dancing Angels however is the catalyst for change and the idea to switch from brogues to kinky boots is born.
Kinky Boots the musical first opened on Broadway in 2012 to great critical acclaim, gaining 6 Tony Awards before taking the West End by storm in 2015, and winning three Olivier awards in 2016, including Best New Musical.
Speaking about bringing the production to The Brindley, Donna Dale said:
"This show has some real belly laughs in it as well as some truly moving moments and the message of accepting differences and helping people by lifting them up is beautiful. With music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, I can guarantee that you’ll be dancing in the aisles by the end and downloading the soundtrack on your way home from the theatre."
Leading the cast are Chris Doyle as Charle Price and Jon Croft as Lola. Playing young Lola is young actor Thomas Graves for whom the show is very much a family affair as his Mum Anna is also in the cast.
Speaking about both of them being cast in the show, Anna said:
"It’s been a unique bonding experience attending rehearsals and tottering round with Lola’s Angels in our heels together. It’s not easy for a 12 year old to do but he’s as unique as Lola herself and I couldn’t be prouder of him. In fact, Lola’s ethos of ‘Just be who you want to be’ couldn’t be more apt."
