Rarely has second-hand and vintage clothing enjoyed such a surge in interest amongst the fashion-conscious. To explore the inspiration behind these historic designs, Chester’s Grosvenor Museum in Grosvenor Street is holding a fascinating ‘Curated Closet’ exhibition from 24 July to 5 December.
It explores 20th century fashion by carefully selecting pieces from over 3000 items in its Historic Costume Collection. A fun fashion ‘catwalk’ will display clothes, jewellery and accessories. Entry is free of charge, but booking may be required (depending on Covid restrictions). Book at https://grosvenormuseum.westcheshiremuseums.co.uk/visit-us/
At the same time, its sister museum, the multi award-winning Lion Salt Works Museum in Northwich will be taking a fresh look at bridal dresses through the decades using stunning photographs of some of the Grosvenor’s historic wedding dresses collection. Pictures for this exhibition were taken at the Lion Salt Works Museum and another of Cheshire West’s museums - the picturesque and historic Stretton Watermill (near Chester). Normal admission prices* for visiting the Lion Salt Works Museum’s exhibition and pre-booking may be required on 01606 275066 (depending on Covid restrictions). More information on both exhibitions can be found at www.westcheshiremusuems.co.uk
Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Councillor, Louise Gittins, said: “Whether you’re a keen follower of fashion or someone who enjoys looking at classic films and enjoying the novelty of seeing the different hats, dresses and suits of different eras, there is something for everyone in these two fresh and imaginative ‘Curated Closet’ exhibitions.”
“The story of fashion is all about how people embraced the times, altering their fashion depending on wars, recessions and pandemics to suit the materials that were readily available. The Grosvenor Museum’s historic costume collection has been built up through the decades from donations and purchases and is a wonderful resource from which to draw on for this exhibition. ‘Curated Closet’ is a visual delight at both museums and is well worth a visit.”
