The Bar at the University of Chester’s Exton Park site has received a national award for being the ‘best bar none’.
The student venue which is run by the University’s Hospitality and Residential Services team is the first in Chester to be awarded the Best Bar None Accreditation.
Best Bar None is an accreditation scheme supported by the Home Office and drinks industry that aims to improve standards in the evening and night time economy.
Through a combination of responsible management and operation of licensed premises, ongoing improvements, and social responsibility, Best Bar None’s goal is to help provide a safer night out to all as well as to recognise and reward responsible premises.
Ian White Domestic Bursar /Executive Director of Hospitality and Residential Services asked James Davies, Operations Manager and Lionel Smith Bar Supervisor to look into achieving the award. Work by the team saw The Bar go above and beyond to exceed the requirements to receive the accreditation impressing the assessors.
The criteria included if the premises were in a good state of repair; COVID-19 safety measures; ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) anti-terrorism training; a weapons policy; customer safety and staff training.
The assessor then visited the premises for an assessment and to check the policies and procedures in place. The assessor awarded bonus points, for being able to order online through the catering and bar app and also the high volume of staff training that is carried out through the University.
The award also recognises the excellent working relationship the team at The Bar has with Cheshire West and Chester Council; it’s partnership with the local Police and recognises that is an active member of Pub Watch.
Ian said: “As the Designated Premises Supervisor for all University of Chester licences, this is a fantastic accreditation to achieve and for us to be the first bar in Chester to receive this. Thanks to the hard work of all the team involved.
“It also gives our student and staff customers the satisfaction of knowing that whilst in our bar all safety measures are correct and they can enjoy a safe night out.”
