Transport and green infrastructure projects in Shotton

Shotton is set to benefit from a major programme of transport improvements and green infrastructure investment to make the town safer, greener and more accessible.

Flintshire County Council will start work on the projects in the new year, delivering a series of upgrades across key transport routes and public spaces across the town.

The highways and transport scheme will begin in early January and is expected to last up to 26 weeks. It includes replacement of bus shelters, removal of unnecessary barriers, and the introduction of dedicated right-turning pockets at key junctions on Charmleys Lane, Chester Close, Nelson Street, and Jubilee Street, helping to improve traffic flow.

Upgrades to street lighting and traffic signals are also planned, along with replacement benches, bollards and bins throughout the area.

As a major element of the scheme, carriageway resurfacing will be carried out on the B5129, covering the section from Shotton Lane to Brook Road.

Traffic management on this busy route will inevitably result in some disruption. To minimise this, the Council and its contractors will prioritise the off-carriageway work at the early stages of the project. This approach will reduce both the level and duration of traffic management required on the B5129.

Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time when travelling through the area.

Councillor Glyn Banks, Cabinet Member for Waste and Transportation, said:

“Maintaining and improving our highway and transport network in Shotton is essential to keep people moving safely and efficiently.

“These works will address pinch points on key routes and make everyday journeys safer and easier for road users and pedestrians.”

Meanwhile, green infrastructure projects at Charmley’s Lane and Ash Grove car parks and the Henry Weale Memorial Garden will get underway on 12 January.

These initiatives form part of the Council’s ongoing Place Making work and commitment to enhancing local environments, improving community wellbeing, and supporting a more sustainable future.

The projects will focus on expanding green spaces, improving biodiversity, and creating more accessible, nature-rich areas throughout the town. They represent a key investment in Shotton’s long-term environmental resilience and quality of life.

These developments have been made possible with funding from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Grant and the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF).

The green infrastructure projects will include enhancements to public green spaces, including new planting, trees, and nature-rich areas designed to increase biodiversity, improve air quality and reduce carbon.

Community-focused environmental features will also be added, such as new seating and areas designed for wellbeing.
