A book written by a local Chester man Evan Morris is to be released recounting his father's daring World War two exploits.
Major Ron Morris MM. BEM (Middle row far right) retired to after a lifelong career in the army to Broughton Chester in 1976. He subsequently passed away in 1999 at the age of 80. His son Evan recently completed and has had published an account of his fathers WW2 service which saw him escape from the occupation of Singapore by the Japanese in 1942. He was a member of the Special Operations Executive and he and other operatives were responsible for assisting hundreds of personnel to be safely evacuated from Singapore through Sumatra on an extremely hazardous route to Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka).
Following their long and arduous escape they planned to strike back at he heart of the Japanese Empire in occupied Singapore. They sailed from Australia thousands of miles in a small Japanese fishing boat, the exploit was code-named Operation Jaywick. Canoeing into Singapore harbour they would limpet mine 38,000 tones of Japanese ships causing severe damage to the Japanese in their Asian bastion.

The 80th Anniversary of Operation Jaywick will be the 23rd September 2023 which the books release is planned to coincide with. Evan recently undertook a one hour interview with BBC Singapore who will be covering this significant milestone.
‘My father was a very humble man who actually spoke very little about his war time achievements’ said Evan. ‘I collected a range of books and documents covering the invasion of Singapore, the escape which was to become known as the “Second Dunkirk” and his military records including his Special Operations Executive records from Kew. After three long years I have published an account which I believe truly records the amazing endeavours of the crew of the mission. Militarily and without any disrespect Operation Jaywick was actually a greater success and more audacious than the famous Cockleshell Heroes’. The Tiger’s Revenge gives the reader a unique and personal insight into the operation from its inception through to its highly effective execution and escape by the entire crew, unharmed back to Australia.
Finally Evan said: ‘The book is a mark of respect for some very brave men in the hope of some recognition and to keep the story alive beyond its 80th anniversary. All profits and royalties from the book will be paid to associations in Australia and Singapore.
The Tiger’s Revenge is available in all good bookshops and Amazon Books:
