Congratulations to Simon Grand, who made his 100th appearance for Chester FC this afternoon against AFC Telford United!
The central defender has been an ever-present following his arrival at the Deva Stadium in July 2018.
Bern and Jonno brought in the vastly experienced player having fended off competition from higher up the pyramid that summer.
A rock-solid centre back who can also chip in with a goal at the right end – Grandy scored his first for the club in our 3-0 win over Curzon Ashton in his second appearance for Chester.
Grand ended that season with 41 appearances in all competitions and bagged four goals. He headed home Chester’s winner at Darlington – the brilliant set piece goal at Blackwell Meadows which many remember fondly.
He also struck against AFC Telford and Altrincham during 2018/19.
Simon would then score a further three goals last season in 38 games of a campaign curtailed by the pandemic.
The goal he scored in February of 2020 is perhaps his most memorable. The defender fired home a stoppage time winner over eventual Champions King’s Lynn Town at the Deva on a memorable night in which the Blues won 3-2.
Linking up with Danny Livesey once more in his career to form a well disciplined and commanding defensive partnership and, even with him turning 37 years old next month, he remains as important as ever for the club.
Chester is now his most ‘appeared for’ side in a superb career which has seen him edge ever closer to an incredible milestone of 600 matches as a player. Watch this space.
Congratulations, Grandy!
