In her first contribution at Prime Minister’s Questions since being elected, Samantha Dixon called on Rishi Sunak to stop sewage being pumped into the River Dee.
Currently, not one English river is classed as being in a healthy condition and none meet good chemical standards, with only a few meeting good ecological criteria.
In 2021, over 53,000 hours of pure sewage were released into the Dee.
During Prime Minister’s Questions, Chester’s MP asked:
“Why does the Prime Minister think it's acceptable for sewage to be pumped into the beautiful River Dee that flows through Chester for the next 27 years?”
In response, the Prime Minister said:
“Of course, it’s not acceptable, that’s why this Government has gone further than any other Government in tacking this issue.
“Committing to monitor 100% of storm overflows. An investment programme of £56bn to upgrade infrastructure. And enshrining in law strict targets, as well as introducing unlimited fines for water companies.”
Earlier this year, Samantha convened a ‘Summit of the Dee’ meeting, which brought together organisations and partners, including Welsh Water, to discuss the vision for the future of the Groves and River Dee.
Ms Dixon commented:
“The River Dee is one of Chester’s greatest assets. The continued dumping of sewage into our river is damaging for the people using the river, the businesses located along the river, and the wildlife that call the river home.
“The Government’s current plan means sewage could continue to be released into the river for the next 27 years. This is simply unacceptable.
“I am pleased Cheshire West and Chester Council is already taking steps to improve the situation through the completion of the new surface water drain that helps the sewer system cope during heavy rainfall.
“This is one step towards ending the sewage crisis. We are working hard locally on this issue, it’s time for the Government to step up their game.”
