The repairs to Chester’s City Walls at the collapsed section has reached a significant milestone, the completion of Stage One, the stabilisation works.
Stage Two of the project involves a series of carefully planned intrusive investigations.
This phase is particularly complex, as it includes carrying out trial pits and ground investigation works both adjacent to the City Walls and within the inner core.
These activities are essential to fully understand the condition of the structure, the form of the wall construction and the ground conditions. This will enable an appropriate and robust design solution to be developed during the next stage. It is estimated that Stage Two will be completed towards the middle of 2026.
The Council’s Director of Transport and Highways, Rose McArthur said:
“This is a delicate and fragile scheduled monument and there have been challenges along the way, including tight site constraints and access restrictions, which has required careful planning and sequencing of temporary construction works.
“Teams have had to react to the day-to-day changing situation as collapse material is removed and the full picture becomes apparent – all whilst maintaining the stability of the City Walls.
“There has been a huge amount of local interest in the project during the Stage 1 works. We are pleased that Stage 1 has now been completed and we can start Stage Two works. A big thank you to everyone involved.”
The section of the City Walls has now been secured and stabilised.
A ‘Matterport’ 3D image of the site is now available on the City Walls webpage on the Council’s website:
It shows the complexity of Stage One.
