Rehearsals are underway at a Chester city centre theatre for the staging of an iconic 1970s comedy by an acclaimed American playwright.
The play, "Last of The Red Hot Lovers" by Neil Simon is set to be staged at Chester Little Theatre from Saturday 3rd May to Saturday 10th May at 7.30pm. There will also be a Matinee performance at 2.30pm on Saturday 10th May. The production will be directed for Chester Little Theatre by Margaret Bennett.
Set in New York in the early 1970s, "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" tells the story of Barney Cashman, a middle-aged, married, overworked fish restaurateur who wants to join the sexual revolution before its over. Barney decides to embark on three different seductions in of all places, his Mother's apartment. With each woman proving a very different experience for Barney, from the sex-mad Elaine to madcap Bobbi and depressed housewife Jeanette, he must decide whether he wants to have a full-blown affair or just some extra-marital fun with someone other than his wife! Just which one will he choose? Written in 1969, the play reflects attitudes and language of the time.
"Last of the Red Hot Lovers" opened at The Eugene O'Neil Theatre on Broadway in December 1969 and ran until September 1971.
Speaking about the production at Chester Little Theatre. Margaret Bennett said:
"We're delighted to be staging one of Neil Simon's iconic New York comedies. It's a play that borders on farce but has lots of pathos too, we hope the audience has as much fun watching it as we've had in rehearsals."
