Chester Town Hall played host to a glittering evening of music recently, headlined by one of the city’s best loved buskers, with two more performances set to take place on 24th May.
Talented violinist Philip Chidell, who is often seen performing in the shadow of Chester's iconic Eastgate Clock swapped street for stage for a concert featuring his very own 18-piece orchestra. Joined by a line-up of special guests, Philip presented a joyous and uplifting evening of music in the spirit of André Rieu’s famed musical spectaculars.
The packed audience, which included the Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr. Razia Daniels, was treated to a varied and entertaining programme. Highlights included the stirring Nessun Dorma, elegant Strauss waltzes and timeless favourites from film and musical theatre. In a surprise appearance, Chester Male Voice Choir joined Philip and his orchestra on stage, delighting the audience with powerful and moving renditions of Tell My Father, Danny Boy and Loch Lomond. The evening concluded with a well-deserved standing ovation.
Following the success of the concert, Philip and his orchestra will return to Chester Town Hall on Saturday 24th May for two further performances, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
Reflecting on the first concert, Philip said:
“There’s something truly special about performing music with this young and talented orchestra in such a beautiful, historic venue. The warmth and enthusiasm of the audience was unforgettable, and the orchestra and I can’t wait to return with more wonderful music. For those who prefer a daytime performance, our matinée will be the perfect way to spend a spring afternoon.”
Philip began playing the violin at the age of six and, just two years later, was offered a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, becoming their youngest student at the time. His musical journey has taken him to prestigious venues such as the Bridgewater Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, Manchester Cathedral and St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. In recent years, Philip has become a much-loved performer on the streets of Chester, entertaining residents and visitors alike.
Chester Male Voice Choir is an award-winning ensemble known for its wide-ranging repertoire. The choir, led by its Musical Director Joe Mann, has performed for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family, as well as featuring on both television and radio.
