Officers investigating suspicious activity in Ellesmere Port have issued two CCTV images.
At sometime between 2am and 3am on 25 January two unknown men were spotted trying door handles on cars around the Talbot Road area of the town.
A man confronted the men who then struck him to the face.
Officers have now issued CCTV images of two men they would like to speak to and are appealing to anyone who may have any information to report it to police.
Police Constable Jake Marsh, of Ellesmere Port Beat Management Team, said: “The victim thankfully only sustained reddening to his face but this could have had devastating consequences.
“There were a number of reports of suspicious activity around cars in the early hours of 25 January and it is possible that these incidents are linked.
“We have a number of enquiries underway and are doing all we can to track down those responsible, but I would like to remind residents to make sure their vehicles are secure.
“As part of our enquiries, we are asking anyone who may know the men in the pictures, or the men themselves, to come forward.
“The same goes for anyone who has any CCTV or dashcam footage from around the time and area that the offences are believed to have taken place to get in touch."
