As we mark volunteer’s week, the NSPCC would like take the opportunity to thank the excellent people across the North West who have recently volunteered to take on some amazing fundraising challenges to raise money for the charity.
This year, it’s even more important that we celebrate fundraisers, as fundraising has changed drastically to adhere to government guidelines. Instead of the classic marathons, and bake sales, many are adapting their skills into challenges, often with a virtual element. I’d like to tell you about a couple of people who are taking on fantastic trials to raise funds locally.
Lancashire-born lead singer of Wet Wet Wet, Kevin Simm, recently held an online concert to raise money for Childline. Kevin volunteered his time and talent to raise a total of £1,535 for the service with the ‘mini-gig’, which has more than 8,000 views on his Facebook page.
90% of the NSPCC’s funding comes directly from fundraising and generous donations, showing just how crucial fundraising is to make sure that the charity can continue to support children and young people.
Another example is Hannah MacDonald, 25, from Irlam, has took on a run every day for 26 days to raise money for the NSPCC, with family and friends phoning in to dictate the length of the run. Hannah pledged to call a friend or family member every day for 26 days, letting them choose the distance she ran to raise money for the charity. Hannah has run more than 152km and raised more than £500 for the NSPCC.
These fundraisers came about following urgent appeal ‘Still here for children’ where the NSPCC urged the public to fundraise or donate to help fund vital services like Childline, so the charity can continue to be here for children who need help.
Since the start of January Childline has delivered 6,938 counselling sessions to children and young people who have got in touch about Coronavirus (COVID-19), and every penny raised by the volunteer fundraisers means we can answer another child.
If your readers have been inspired this volunteer week to join our fundraisers, and help us fight for every childhood, they can email northappeals@nspcc.org.uk to find out what they can do to start their own challenge.
