Furlough at Bunbury Mill - Here's the latest news.
Once again, the doors are closed, the wheel is dry, and the machinery is silent. Brought to a halt, not this time by structural disaster or financial closure, but by the unprecedented Covid pandemic. Safety must always be paramount, and unfortunately, it is simply not practicable to open the mill to visitors while observing social distancing requirements.
Fortunately, before the lock down started, we were able to strip the machinery and give the whole mill a thorough cleaning, so it is all in excellent condition and waiting for the time when we can grind again. Who knows when that will be? We are keeping a close eye on the situation, but it seems unlikely at present that we shall be able to reopen during the remainder of the 2020 season.
Meanwhile, the grounds are being kept in good condition, and limited maintenance work continues in the mill. We have used the good weather to do some painting - you could now eat your lunch off the basement floor!
The wildlife does not seem to have noticed any difference - we have two families of mallards and at least one of moorhens on the pond. You will be pleased to note that the ducklings are observing correct social distancing!
We are pleased to see occasional visitors, particularly with children, coming to the mill site to enjoy the ducks, the wild flowers, and perhaps have a picnic in the pleasant grounds. We thank you all for leaving no litter, and we hope to see you ourselves in better times.
