Thousands of people in Cheshire who have lost a loved-one do not receive bereavement support, a local MP has been told.
Justin Madders, MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, lent his support to the third annual National Day of Reflection organised by cancer charity Marie Curie Care.
Organisers of the initiative, held In Parliament on March 23 each year, aim to bring together communities and groups across the UK to remember family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues who have died. In so doing they offer support for people who are grieving and needing a space to talk openly about death and dying.
Many organisations, schools and workplaces nationwide observed a minute’s silence at noon on that day to show support for the millions of people who have been bereaved.
Mr Madders, formerly Shadow Health Minister, was informed that during 2021 – the latest year for which figures are available – said he was surprised to learn there were 18,520 bereavements in Cheshire West and Chester but nearly half of the bereaved involved (46 per cent) said they received no support from friends.
