A member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales is calling for the default 20mph speed limit to be scrapped.
Mr Rowlands, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Transport and Infrastructure is leading the Welsh Conservative’s campaign to scrap the default 20mph speed limit.
He is a long-time critic of the introduction of the new legislation and this week he hit out at the lack of roads being reverted back to 30mph in Flintshire and expressed concern over data which shows that journey times are getting longer due to the disastrous policy.
He said:
“It's clear to me, that there seems to be an inconsistency in approach to the reversal of the 20mph default speed limit by councils across Wales. In Wrexham for example the council have announced they are reversing the Welsh Government's 20mph default speed limits on 52 of their roads and yet Flintshire are changing only six.
“It is absolutely crazy. Local authorities are being tasked with clearing up the mess the Welsh Government have created and quite clearly some councils are still refusing to listen to the public.
“New data also shows that journey times are getting longer because of the Welsh Labour Government’s 20mph speed limit.
“The whole exercise has been a complete and utter waste of money and the Welsh Government should never have introduced the 20mph default speed limit. The funds should have been spent where needed on the NHS, education and public services.”
Welsh Conservatives have renewed calls for scrapping Labour’s disastrous 20mph speed limit policy and focusing on a targeted approach in sensitive areas using evidence-based road safety measures.
With over 134,000 drivers caught speeding since the law came into force, it’s clear the policy is causing confusion and disruption.
Mr Rowlands added:
“With the expected economic hit of up to £9 billion and the £32million already spent roll it out, these latest figures show that Labour’s 20mph speed limit has been a disaster for Wales.
“The Labour-run Welsh Government is leading a war on motorists and slowing Wales down.
“The Welsh Conservatives are the only party in the Senedd committed to scrapping Labour’s 20mph speed limit.”
