Man jailed for assault in Ellesmere Port

A man has been jailed following an unprovoked assault in Ellesmere Port.

Daniel Monaghan, 38, of Halkyn Road in Chester, appeared at Chester Crown Court on Monday 15th September where he was sentenced to 26 months after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

This included 16 months for the assault plus the activation of a suspended sentence.

On Saturday 12th July at around 10am, the 44-year-old victim had been in a shop on Overpool Road when he was subjected to an unprovoked attack by Monaghan.

He headbutted and punched the victim, causing him to fall to the ground. While on the ground, Monaghan then kicked the victim to the face.

The victim suffered lacerations to his face, as well as fractured eye sockets, a fractured jaw and a broken nose. He was unable to name Monaghan, but he was later identified by officers after they viewed CCTV footage.

He was arrested and subsequently charged.

DC Jason Smith said:

“Monaghan seriously assaulted the victim in this case, causing multiple facial fractures in a brutal and unprovoked attack.

“I welcome the custodial sentence handed to him and hope this will help bring the victim some sense of closure knowing Monaghan is now behind bars for his actions.”
