Loving Mother Mary Hassey dies at the age of just 38

In January of last year Mary Hassey (age 38) was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma, which was a huge surprise, and upset.

Mary was the most incredible person, a loving Mother, a ray of sunshine, and the happiest person I and many others have met.  Throughout her 17-month fight, she did not complain once and just had a smile on her face throughout.

Mary, myself and our son Tommy who is 9, fought with everything to try and win the battle, and how we fought inspired many people.

Mary had surgery last January to remove 95% of her tumour, and from Feb - April - she started treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Clatterbride Centre in Liverpool.  During her treatment, Mary's and my positivity helped others to feel like they could fight and win their battle with cancer.

Unfortunately, two weeks after Mary finished her treatment, she had two grand mal seizures, and we ended up in the hospital to find out that her tumour had progressed.  This shocked us, and even our Nurse said this is a rare case that the tumour has grown back so quickly after treatment.  At this point, I began implementing my plan around tackling cancer naturally as I spent weeks/months researching how we could beat this.

I knew many success stories were related to cannabis oil, and I had secured some with THC, as that is what kills cancer.  Alongside the oil, we did Oxygen chamber therapy, an Alkaline diet and purchased an alkaline water machine.  We also had natural supplements such as Valasta, which helped.

We did nothing but natural treatments, and when we had a scan in June, the tumour was stable; in August, the tumour was starting to shrink.  We could implement these things because we had an army behind us in our hometown of Runcorn.  People raised money by climbing mountains, doing gigs (Brothers in Harm's), and festivals etc.; we could fight as a result of the love and support from the community, and given there is a lot of negativity in the world right now, the love from the town of Runcorn truly shows the good in people.

Things were going well, but Mary was on dexamethasone from Jan - August, and she ended up getting steroid-induced psychosis in September and was in the hospital for ten days.  It improved when she came off the steroids; however, she began to have severe anxiety.  We were still giving her the cannabis oil, but we could not give her the amount she needed to kill her cancer due to the anxiety getting a little out of control.  As a result, the tumour grew back again Jan this year.  We started an alternative chemotherapy and upped the oil, but we found out in March continued to grow and doubled in size.  I then implemented sea cucumber from New Zealand as this was a plan B.

Around April/May, I could see things were getting difficult for Mary, and she lost mobility in her leg and arm, and speech became very difficult. She also became very bloated as a result of the steroids.  I put my job on hold to be her full-time carer along with the support from Mary's mum and my mum and Dad.

We managed as best as we could and kept making memories and smiling.  We had amazing support from the Widnes and Runcorn cancer centre and Ahead of the game foundation in the Wirral.

In June, we decided it was best for Mary to go to Halton Haven Hospice, and again the staff was the best, and they loved Mary so much that they even arranged a final date night for us just over a week before she passed.

Mary passed away on the 2nd of July, which broke our hearts, and we are still dealing with this each day; however, Mary made us promise to be happy; her exact words to me were, "Be happy otherwise, what's the point."

My biggest fear is Tommy not having any parents to help him through life, so my mission is to look after my mental and physical help, so I can watch my son grow old. I have implemented the gym for us both and started boxing and we have a bucket list of adventures to enjoy living in Mary's honour.

This is a little about Mary's story, but my main reason for reaching out is because Roy Tully of Brothers in Harm's wrote a song for us which was written as if it was from my perspective, and it's the most unique gift and beautifully worded.  Brothers in Harm's are a local band who sing across the North West.  In the band are Roy and his uncle Paul Tully.  They have hundreds of songs which Roy has written, and I'd love to return the gift he was given us, but helping to get his voice heard across the world in Mary's honour. Their songs are incredible!!!
