Ellesmere Port MP Justin Madders has welcomed a major £20 million Government investment to revitalise the town.
The area will receive £2 million a year for the next decade as part of Labour’s £5 billion Pride in Place programme, which is targeting 330 left-behind communities across the UK.
Crucially, it will be local people — not Whitehall — who decide how the money is spent.
A new Neighbourhood Board, made up of residents, community leaders and local organisations, will shape and oversee how the funding is used.
In a message to constituents, Ellesmere Port and Bromborough MP Justin Madders said:
“I’m excited to share this fantastic news for our community.
“This is what a Labour Government delivers: investing in our town centres and restoring pride in our neighbourhoods, which I know is such a big priority for local people.
“Residents will decide how the money is used — whether that’s improving parks, revitalising the high street, or bringing empty buildings back to life.
“It’s your town, and your voice matters. Let me know your ideas!”
The funding is part of Labour’s wider Plan for Change, which also hands new powers to communities to:
- Take over empty shops and derelict pubs
- Block the spread of unwanted betting shops and vape stores
- Buy back beloved community assets like grassroots sports clubs
Labour says the goal is to tackle deep-rooted inequality, breathe new life into neglected towns and ensure local people are in the lead when it comes to shaping their future.
Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Steve Reed MP said:
“£20 million is coming to Ellesmere Port Town thanks to your Labour MP, Justin Madders.
“That’s a huge amount of money — and it will make such a difference in transforming the area. But best of all, it’s local people themselves who will decide how that money gets spent. That’s the difference a Labour MP makes.”
Launching the Pride in Place programme, Prime Minister Keir Starmer added:
“The funding is significant — but the way in which the money will be used is hugely important. Because it’s not Whitehall dictating what’s going to be done, it’s people with skin in the game.”
