Local MP Justin Madders organised a 4.5km walk and talk focused on men’s health to coincide with so-called Blue Monday on January 19, sometimes described as the most depressing day of the year.
The Ellesmere Port and Bromborough MP was joined on the walk around Whitby Park by residents, veterans and organisations promoting positive wellbeing, including Chapter and Healthbox.
The 4.5km distance was chosen to reflect the 4.5-year gap in life expectancy between men and women in the UK, linked to factors such as preventable illness, later engagement with health services and the tragic impact of suicide. The event began and ended at Theatre Porto, with many participants staying on afterwards for a drink and conversation in the café.
The walk aimed to promote connection, encourage gentle activity and raise awareness of the physical and mental health issues affecting men and boys.
Justin Madders said:
“It was really encouraging to see local men — and women — out and about together, demonstrating the positive benefits of staying active even in the depths of winter. Thankfully, the weather was kind to us.
“For many men and boys, opening up or seeking support isn’t always easy, which is why the groups who joined us play such a vital role. I was proud to walk alongside constituents — and my dog Mellie — to celebrate that work and encourage more people to get involved.”
The walk followed the launch of the UK’s first Men’s Health Strategy on International Men’s Day in November. The strategy includes measures to tackle prostate cancer and £3.6 million in funding for suicide prevention, including a partnership between the Premier League’s Together Against Suicide initiative and Samaritans.
Mr Madders added:
“Raising awareness of men’s health doesn’t take anything away from the vital work to support women and girls — it strengthens our whole community.”
