Ellesmere Port and Bromborough MP Justin Madders is championing a Wirral-based charity’s pioneering suicide prevention model, following a landmark clinical evaluation recommending its nationwide rollout.
The Martin Gallier Project (MGP) was founded by Jessica Gallier-Booth after her father Martin tragically took his own life in 2017.
Since opening in 2019 with just 64 pence in the bank, it has grown into a nationally recognised service for suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention, with services at its New Ferry HQ and bases in Chester, Crewe and Macclesfield.
An independent study by Liverpool John Moores University and NHS partners found clear evidence that MGP’s unique, non-clinical model is both effective and ready to be replicated across the UK.
Mr Madders, who hosted the report launch in Parliament just ahead of Suicide Prevention Awareness Week (September 7-13), praised the “fantastic work” of the charity across his constituency.
He said:
“I want to pay tribute to Jessica Gallier-Booth, who in the face of such tragic circumstances channelled her grief into creating a project that has supported so many people. Jessica isn’t just campaigning for change – she is delivering change.”
The report shows that since 2019, MGP has delivered 48,900 suicide interventions, supporting nearly 10,000 people, with 94.6% showing clear improvements. By working with local health services to take referrals, the project has also saved the NHS an estimated £1.2m a year by reducing A&E reattendance by almost 70%.
Mr Madders added:
“These statistics speak for themselves and show the potential in rolling out this model across the country. This community-based approach meets people where they are, with no waiting lists or barriers. It normalises and destigmatises support – which is vital in getting help to those who need it most.”
Jessica Gallier-Booth said the findings confirm what her team sees daily: early, human-centred support saves lives.
She commented:
“My hope is that this report not only evidences our impact but also serves as a blueprint for what suicide prevention can and should look like across the country. It's a call to action for policymakers, funders, and communities to reimagine how we care for those in crisis.”
MGP’s ethos of “no criteria, no waiting lists, no barriers” continues to guide its mission to save lives and support families.
