Leading A Cappella Choir to perform for charity concert at Chester Cathedral

One of Britain’s most successful male-voice a cappella choirs is coming to Chester Cathedral for a charity concert on 23rd October .

Renowned for their exceptional live performances, Cottontown Chorus, will perform songs ranging from modern takes on traditional music, through generations of pop and rock classics. All with unique harmony.

Cottontown was formed in Bolton in 1979 and currently comprises more than 60 male singers aged between 15 and 82 who come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Under director Neil Firth, the chorus was awarded first prize at this year’s Manchester Amateur Choral Competition and went on in May to win the gold medal for the ninth time in the annual contest hosted by the British Association of Barbershop Singers. The Chorus previously won the BBC Adult Choir of the Year.

The concert, titled Of Love, Loss and Hope, will be held by candlelight and will raise funds for Sands, a charity which provides care for those touched by pregnancy or baby-loss.

Also performing will be the highly-acclaimed Northern String Quartet in its 20th anniversary year. Admired for its versatility and musical excellence the quartet has appeared on BBC2, ITV and Netflix.

The evening is part of a series of successful events by Cheshire-based purchasing director Russ Wintle, who set himself the target of raising £60,000 for good causes in the year leading up to his 60th birthday, supported by Innospec, his employerthrough both their generous match-funding programme and through their sponsorship of this particular event.

Cottontown’s musical director Neil Firth said:

“We’re delighted to be working with Russ on this fantastic fundraising adventure and so excited to be performing for the first time at Chester Cathedral. We do hope the audience will be moved by our harmonies ringing through this hallowed setting. For 60 guys from Bolton it’s a great honour to be asked to add our voices to more than a thousand years of choral history. The songs may be a little different today but I’m sure we’ll find a great affinity with all those people who’ve sung here down the generations."
