The curtain is set to rise at a Chester theatre on the stage version of the classic British comedy "Whisky Galore" and an adaptation that pays tribute to the feisty all-female theatrical troupes who toured the Country during the post war years.
This new twist on Compton Mackenzie's novel and much-loved rip-roaring Ealing comedy has been adapted for the stage by Philip Goulding and will run at Chester Little Theatre in Gloucester Street, Newtown from Saturday 1st July - Saturday 8th July at 7.30pm. The production will be directed for Chester Little Theatre by Lexie Fox-Hutchings.
Combining physical theatre, panto and farce, with just seven performers playing dozens of roles between them, the play, set in 1955, tells the story of The Pallas Players, an all-female theatre company as they prepare to stage a production of "Whisky Galore", Compton Mackenzie's classic tale about the islanders of Great and Little Todday who find their whisky supply dwindling as the Government diverts the precious liquor to the Americas. Relief appears to be in hand when a 50,000 bottle cargo shipwrecks close by, until the meddling Captain Waggett of the Home Guard has other ideas.
Speaking about the production, Lexie Fox-Hutchings said:
"The play is a hilarious tribute to both Compton Mackenzie's classic tale of the colourful characters of the Scottish isles as well as the all-female touring theatre troupes of the 1950s as seven performers take on dozens of roles, and tells the tale of a group of high spirited Scots with no spirits left and the seemingly divine intervention that brings them together. We can't wait for our audiences to see this rip-roaring comedy as we round off our current season."
