
One of Wrexham's top orchestras is set to stage a glittering "Last Night of The Proms" style concert with a "Welsh twist" at the city's William Aston Hall.
Billed as a glittering finale to their 2024/25 season of concerts, Wrexham Symphony Orchestra will stage the concert on Sunday 1st June at 2.30pm. The Orchestra will be joined on stage by soprano Erin Rossington and guest conductor Robert Guy. The concert will include performances of "last Night of the Proms" favourites including Thomas Arne's "Rule Britannia", Edward Elgar's iconic "Pomp & Circumstance No.1" and Sir Hubert Parry's "Jerusalem". Other pieces set to be performed include the dynamic "Libertango" by Piazolla and selections of music from opera and film.
Speaking about the special concert, Matthew Ellis, the Chair of Wrexham Symphony Orchestra said:
"Be sure to bring your flags, hats, singing voices, and silly dances as we round-off our season in style with a concert full of joyful pomp and circumstance with music from film, TV, opera and the around the world. Of course, there will be the chance to join in with the usual pomp and ceremony. We are delighted to have guest conductor Robert Guy leading proceedings and soprano Erin Rossington performing some wonderful arias to lead us through the pomp and ceremony of the prom, this family-friendly concert is not to be missed!"
A Welsh National Opera Associate Artist for 2024/25, soprano Erin Rossington was raised near Llanfair Talhaiarn in North Wales and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Her roles include Maguelonne Cendrillon, Miss Fortune Miss Fortune, Mimì La bohème, Fiordiligi Così fan tutte, and Vitellia La clemenza di Tito. Erin made her Aldeburgh Festival debut as Ina in TIDE in 2022 and performed as Lady Billows in Albert Herring for Clonter Opera. Erin is a regular on the competition platform, having won the International Voice of the Future award at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, the RNCM’s 2019 Elizabeth Harwood Memorial Prize, and the Towyn Roberts Scholarship at the National Eisteddfod of Wales 2023. She was also selected as a finalist for the Vincerò competition in Verona in 2023.
Conductor Robert Guy is well known to audiences in Wrexham and as a co-founder of NEW Sinfonia, he was a driving force behind the acclaimed "Gresford: Up From Underground" Opera project which engaged thousands of people and honoured the 90th anniversary of the Gresford Disaster in a moving and groundbreaking way. From his early days as a professional freelance viola player with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North and playing alongside the Allegri String Quartet, to standing on the podium with world-class ensembles, Robert has built a career defined by bold leadership, relentless energy, and a belief that music can transform lives. He has conducted 65 world premieres, shaped the next generation of musicians, and led orchestras and choirs from London's West End to Hong Kong, Austria to Kazakhstan. As Principal Conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, he nurtures the next wave of talent, earning the trust of Sir Simon Rattle himself. A passionate educator, he leads one of the largest university music programs in the UK at the University of Manchester, inspiring hundreds of young musicians to discover their own voices. His work has been featured on BBC Radio, showcased on international stages, and even recorded for Sony PlayStation.
