Hundreds of jobs are threatened by collapse of struggling retailers.
Retail workers across the county face an uncertain future following the collapse of retailers Toys 'R' Us UK and Maplin.
Toys 'R' Us had reached an agreement with its landlords to reduce the rents on its stores just before Christmas. However, a weak trading performance across the festive period hampered any hopes of a recovery in revenues leading into the new year.
Maplin had been in talks with Edinburgh Woollen Mill regarding a takeover. The Dumfries and Galloway based business also operates the Peacocks brand in the UK. However, it is understood that the talks over a potential sale have stalled.
Toys 'R' Us has four stores in Cheshire, while Maplin presently has five retail outlets in the region. Administrators for both companies have stated that stores will remain open for now, and that those with gift cards should spend them as soon as possible.
The Toys 'R' Us online store has been closed, however.
Elsewhere, it's also been confirmed that Marks and Spencer will be closing their Stockport store.
They're looking to reduce floor space nationally, but Stockport Council say they'll work with M&S to support the affected staff.
Stockport also hosts an outlet for Toys 'R' Us and Maplin respectively.
