Work to improve Cheshire’s new natural burial ground has been completed.
Monument Meadow Natural Burial Ground was opened in Farndon in October last year by the Barnston Estate.
The five-acre natural burial ground is set amid a wildflower meadow with an oak framed pavilion to provide shelter and peaceful views across rolling countryside and the Clwydian Range.
Over the last few weeks the Estate’s landscaping team has installed new estate fencing and a gate to the site. There has also been extensive hedge and tree planting work, including evergreen yew hedges, Mountain Ash and mixed Maple tree varieties.
Hawthorn and oak trees have been added to the meadow along with Bird Cherry trees, which will look beautiful in the late spring when they are full of white almond scented blossom.
These are in addition to the abundance of local species of bulbs and wildflowers already in the meadow.
Site Manager David Atkinson said: “Creating a tranquil area and a living memorial landscape that is ecologically rich is important to us.
“People tell us that they love the peace and calmness they feel when they visit us and they take comfort from the surrounding landscape. It is what makes it such a beautiful place to be laid to rest.”
The natural burial ground is available for residents of surrounding villages and beyond and welcomes people of all faiths.
A variety of sustainable funeral options are available, including natural burial and scattering of ashes and both religious and secular ceremonies can be catered for.
A natural burial is where an un-embalmed body is laid to rest in a biodegradable coffin or shroud in a carefully hand-dug grave. Natural burial enables people to choose a funeral which is unique, in tune with nature and gentle on the environment.
A funeral at Monument Meadow follows no rules, format or set length of time. Each one is individual to the wishes of the family or the deceased.
Monument Meadow is a member of the Association of Natural Burial Grounds.
