Eighty golfers from across the North of England and Wales headed to Eaton Golf Club and swung into action to raise over £8,500 for a Cheshire and a Welsh charity.
The golf club, in Waverton, Chester, held a charity PGA Pro-Am to raise funds for the Clwyd Special Riding Centre and Save the Family charities.
The PGA North Region event’s main sponsor was the Sandstone Care Group, an independent quality-driven care home group which is based in Warrington and has seven homes across the North West, Shropshire and mid Wales.
Ben Challinor, a director of Sandstone Care Group, said: “We were delighted to support Eaton Golf Club and their Pro-Am tournament and to help to raise funds for two important local charities. Congratulations go to the winners and well done to all those who took part.”
Twenty teams, all made up of one professional golfer and three amateurs, competed in the event. The winning team was DRP Insurance (Andy Dutton, Andy Senior and Rob Gibbons), led by golf professional Lewis Johnson from Holywell Golf Club who also won the Professionals First Prize of £1,500.
In second place was Barlows (Harry Fildes, Scott Lamont and Tom Cook), led by golf pro Jamie Guy from Wallasey Golf Club, while in third place was APD-1 (Alan Bevan, Mathew Tudor Owen and Paul Williams), led by golf pro Graham Roberts from Eaton Golf Club.
Lady Captain Derryn Williams said: “After spending much of my working life in a school where families were often stretched to breaking point, I know how devastating this is for the children and their parents. For this reason, I have chosen to support a charity very local to our Golf Club, Save the Family. Save the Family is a Cotton Edmunds based charity that strives to keep families together.”
Men’s Captain Phil Davies said: “It was a really fantastic day with intense competition with the golf and, amazingly, the first five teams all on the same score. A big thank you to everyone who took part and to all the sponsors and donors for their support and generosity.”
“We’re delighted that so much money was raised for two local charities, including my chosen charity, Clwyd Special Riding Centre in Llanfynydd near Wrexham, where my sister is a volunteer.
“It is a place I am very passionate about supporting because it offers a variety of equine experiences for people with additional needs. Over the past 40 years it has made a difference to so many lives.”
The golf was followed by prize presentations, a charity auction and raffle, a four-course evening meal plus comedy from Vince Earl.
