From 29th July, the Frodsham Street public toilets in Chester will be temporarily closed for one month, as part of a multi-agency activity to address anti-social behaviour and crime in the area.
Councillor Stuart Bingham, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Neighbourhood Pride, said:
“We are working with Cheshire Police and partners to protect residents, businesses, and visitors from anti-social behaviour and crime.
“A small number of individuals have been involved in a series of incidents at the Frodsham Street toilets, causing serious disruption in the area. Action is being taken against those responsible, plus measures to prevent further harm to the community.
“We will seek prosecution where we can and offer support to any vulnerable individuals who are not breaking the law.
“Our responsibility is to protect the community. We are taking a muti-agency approach to this problem and the temporary closure should provide immediate respite to surrounding businesses and help break the cycle of offending.”
Chester Local Policing Unit Commander, Chief Inspector Paul Fegan, said:
“We continue to work in partnership with the Local Authority to make Chester even safer. Through listening to local concerns we’re working to tackle the issues that cause the most concern within the community. This is one of a number of measures being taken locally to address the issue.”
The Council’s ‘spend a penny initiative’ provides information on toilet provision within shopping areas. Designed to give shoppers the choice of toilet access, businesses have been asked what facilities they have, times of access, and what the conditions of access are. Both Chester and Winsford are included with more areas across the borough to be added.
