The MP for Ellesmere Port and Bromborough will join a well-known local fundraiser on an 80-mile charity walk around the beautiful canals of Cheshire.
Justin Madders MP and Freddie Wing, from Sutton Way, Ellesmere Port, will walk for five days in support of the Backford-based Hospice of the Good Shepherd and the Alzheimer’s Society.
The pair will camp out each night and cook their freeze-dried food, including military rations, on a stove.
Justin, who keeps fit by playing football, said:
“I’m treating this as an adventure, not knowing exactly where we’ll be staying each night since we’ll be camping out—and, of course, we’re hoping for good weather!”
He added:
“I’d urge people to support these two fantastic causes by donating to our fundraising page, if they can afford to. The Hospice of the Good Shepherd does exceptional work providing end-of-life care to residents and their families. The Alzheimer’s Society is equally vital, offering crucial support to people affected by dementia, as well as funding research to help find a cure.”
The walk begins at the Ellesmere Port-based National Waterways Museum on Saturday, July 26th. Their route will take sights including Chester City Walls, 13th century Beeston Castle and the impressive 1875 Anderton Boat Lift, near Northwich.
Supporting the Alzheimer’s Society is a cause close to Freddie’s heart. A proud grandad and armed forces veteran, he once worked as a caretaker at a local care home for elderly people.
Freddie, 63, who has raised money for several charities in the past, said:
“I’m really looking forward to the walk, and I know Justin is too. But this isn’t about us—it’s about raising awareness and funds for these great charities.
“Along the way, I hope we’ll meet new people, spread the word, and top up our total with collection boxes.”
