Demolition marks milestone in Ellesmere Port regeneration

A major milestone has been reached in the £14.8 million regeneration of Ellesmere Port as former council offices are demolished to make way for new housing.

The wide-ranging transformation will bring new homes to the Civic Way site, a modernised market hall and a safer route for walking, wheeling and cycling.

Funding includes £13.3 million from Government and £1.5 million from Cheshire West and Chester Council.

Justin Madders, MP for Ellesmere Port and Bromborough, who has backed the council-led scheme from the outset, said:

“This is regeneration that puts the community first. We’re talking about breathing new life into Ellesmere Port by creating spaces where people want to live, work, and visit.”

The demolition paves the way for homes targeted at first-time buyers, families, and key workers—just a short walk from the high street—as well as additional housing on a nearby site at the junction of Coronation Road and McGarva Way.

Mr Madders added:

“By bringing more people into the town centre, we’re making Ellesmere Port a place where people want to settle. That supports local businesses, boosts safety and vibrancy, and strengthens pride in our community.”

The broader regeneration programme will see the town’s market hall reimagined as a modern, flexible space for events, improved facilities, and support for small businesses. Plans include a new walking and cycling route connecting the train station to the market.

He added:

“I know how much the current market means to many residents. This isn’t about losing that—it’s about rethinking it to better serve today’s community while keeping its spirit alive.”

Mr Madders emphasised that lasting success relies on joint effort.

He continued:

“With much of the town centre in the hands of the Port Arcades, there’s a limit to what the council can achieve alone. I’ve had ongoing discussions with the owners, and I hope the work now underway inspires them to invest and match the ambition being shown.”

As bulldozers move in to clear the old civic buildings, the MP said there’s a ‘bright future’ ahead.

He said:

“This is about building a future that’s modern, connected, and full of opportunity—and it starts right here,”
