Council gives update on wall collapse at St Oswald’s, Malpas

Cheshire West and Chester Council has set out its plan of action after a section of wall collapsed at St Oswald’s Church, Malpas following heavy storms.

Following the collapse, the Council commissioned a structural engineer to inspect the boundary walls to establish the type and extent of repair that is needed.

There is currently a road closure on Church Street between Old Hall Street and Church Walk with a signed diversion route in place.

The engineer has recommended two main stages of action to be taken – the first stage is to carry out a temporary repair to make the wall safe and the second stage is to carry out the permanent repair of the wall.

The Council’s Head of Regulatory Services, Andrew Rees explained: “The purpose of the temporary works is to support the wall and prevent any further damage to it.

“Investigative surveys are needed before any works can begin, including a radar survey to locate any hidden voids in the wall that could result in a further collapse.  It is also necessary to locate water, gas, electricity services, as well as nearby burials.

“A laser scan survey will also be carried out to allow the exact details of the walls to be measured and recorded. The information gathered will help ensure the stabilisation works can be carried out safely. We are expecting these specialist surveys to be completed by the end of April.

“We recognise the inconvenience the road closure is causing and are grateful for the support and patience of Malpas residents and visitors.  We will continue to progress these works as quickly as possible.”

Once the survey work is complete and findings are reported, it will be possible to finalise plans and start the temporary, stabilising works.  It is anticipated that the temporary works will be completed early summer. Once the stabilising works are complete it will be possible for the road to re-open using temporary traffic signals.

Timeframes may vary, however, if surveys reveal information that shows a different approach is needed.  This project also depends on the availability of suitable contractors.

More precise details will be announced once the Council is able to secure contractors to carry out the works.
