Cats Protection North Wirral is appealing to cat-lovers to help raise vital funds for Garfield, a resilient cat who arrived with his siblings after his owner entered long-term care due to dementia.
On admission, volunteers immediately noticed Garfield’s sore eyes. A veterinary examination revealed he was suffering from a painful corneal ulcer in his right eye, meaning he was not producing enough tears. He was also diagnosed with entropion, a condition where the eyelid turns inward, causing irritation and discomfort.
Thanks to the dedication of the charity’s volunteers, Garfield’s care was prioritised, and he was placed in a loving foster home, where he’s been receiving all of his post-surgical treatment.
Garfield’s medical care alone has exceeded £800 and the charity urgently needs help to cover these costs.
Branch Welfare Lead, Jean Horne, said:
“We’re incredibly grateful that despite his ordeal, Garfield is recovering well thanks to our amazing volunteers and the veterinary treatment he has received.
“After he had his diagnosis, he was immediately started on twice daily drops to heal his ulcer. Once that happened, he underwent surgery to correct the entropion.
“It was vital he had this surgery to protect his vision and ensure long-term eye health.
“Entropion is quite rare in cats, and his surgery and treatment alone cost over £800. That’s before factoring in our general expenses of caring for a cat which, on average, costs nearly £1,000 for a cat to stay with us before finding a loving home.
“We understand that times are difficult at the moment, so we appreciate any kindness towards our appeal even more.”
