Communities to benefit from new speed devices

Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer has purchased new speed monitoring devices for each of Cheshire’s nine policing teams.

Each of the nine local units will have a device at its disposal which will enable the police to monitor more local roads and build data to support enforcement action.

The devices use radar to monitor the speed and volume of passing traffic over the course of a week. Once data is collected, the local team will be able to deploy resources more effectively and ensure appropriate community support.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer said:

“Speeding is one of the top issues raised with me, which is why I made making Cheshire’s roads safer a priority in my Police and Crime Plan.

“When I have been out across the county listening to people’s concerns, it became clear to me that more ways of gathering data to inform action from the police and Local Authorities was needed. That’s exactly what these new devices will enable.”

The devices are currently being prepared for rollout across the county and officers are being trained to ensure that the devices are used safely and to their full potential. When operational, they will provide a welcome boost to the police’s ability to monitor speeding in local communities.

John Dwyer added:

“I know that there are many communities who will want to benefit from a device in their area and I encourage residents to report any issues to the police. That way, your local team and the Constabulary’s Traffic Management Department can assess the best way forward.

“This is all about working together for safer roads, and I will be in touch directly with local Councils and Councillors when these devices are ready to be deployed so they know how to request one of these devices in their community.”
