Blacon cemetery and crematorium grounds have been closed to members of the public, except for funerals.
The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that, where a crematorium is located within a cemetery, that cemetery must be closed to the public under new emergency legislation. The cemetery and crematorium may only be open for burials and cremations.
Cemeteries that do not have a crematorium attached can remain open to the public.
The Council’s other cemeteries at Ellesmere Port, Neston and Overleigh (Handbridge) will remain open.
The emergency legislation is designed to preserve social distancing and help combat the spread of coronavirus.
We intend to keep the situation under review and will inform residents if the situation changes.
Councillor Karen Shore, Deputy Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategic Transport, said: “We understand that this will be upsetting for our residents who wish to visit graves at Blacon cemetery, particularly over the Easter weekend.
“However, the Council must comply with this new legislation and has no choice but to close the grounds to the public at Blacon cemetery. We appreciate your understanding at this difficult time.
“We expect this to be a temporary closure and we will update you on any further developments when we receive them. Residents can feel free to visit our other cemeteries, where we ask you observe social distancing, avoid touching surfaces and wash your hands when back home.”
