This November sees another milestone in the history of transport in Chester, as the Council’s popular Park & Ride service celebrates 40 years of operation.
The service started during the 1980s, as Chester City Council recognised Chester’s car parking requirements could no longer be met without detriment to the historic fabric of the City and introduced the first of four car parks on key approaches.
The service now has the latest low emission ‘Euro VI’ rated engines, free wi-fi, USB charging and next stop announcements on the buses.
Services call at Chester bus station giving customers an opportunity to change buses to access the Countess of Chester Hospital or the business quarter without bringing their car into the City. There is a Changing Places facility located at the bus station and Shop Mobility can also be accessed from there.
The Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Highways, Councillor Karen Shore said:
“The launch of the Park & Ride service saw regular express bus connections to the heart of the City, providing an easy option for motorists whether they were heading to work, shopping or visiting for leisure purposes.
“Accessing the City is quick and easy, so sit back, relax and let our professional drivers transport you swiftly into the centre of Chester, seven days a week.”
To celebrate the anniversary this week, the first 40 passengers at each of the Park & Ride sites on Thursday 23 November will receive a special ticket for free travel all day. First come, first served.
Thursday will also see the start of the extended P&R service for late-night Christmas shopping in Chester on Thursdays - 23 and 30 November, and 7 and 14 December. Then Monday 18, Tuesday 19, Wednesday 20, Thursday 21 and Friday 22 December.
