A newly formed Chester-based theatre company is set to bring its first production, an award-winning musical based on the life of the author of cult West End and Broadway smash hit "RENT", to a venue in the city centre.
Founded earlier this year by performer and theatre producer Luke Disley, Disley Theatrical Productions will stage "tick tick BOOM!", a semi-autobiographical Musical by RENT creator Jonathan Larson at St Mary's Creative Space in Chester from Thursday 27th July - Saturday 29th July at 7.30pm.
Originally conceived by Larson in 1990 as a solo piece, "tick tick BOOM!" tells the story of Jon, a struggling New York based composer as he desperately tries to get his work recognised and agonises that he has made the wrong career choices in order to pursue his dream of becoming a success on Broadway. Jon is joined by his girlfriend Susan and his best friend Michael as he tries to achieve his goal. Adapted and revamped by playwright David Auburn following Jonathan Larson's untimely death in 1996, the show premiered Off-Broadway in 2001 and has since been produced both in the West End and on Broadway. A film version directed by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda and starring Andrew Garfield in the lead role was released in 2021.
The production in Chester will feature Phil Cross (Oliver!, Joseph and The Amazing Techicolor Dreamcoat, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban") as Jon, Ceri-Lyn Cissone (The Rocky Horror Picture Show,(European tour) Merry Wives of Windsor (Shakespeare's Globe Theatre/NYC & LA), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Barbican,LSO Radio 4 broadcast) as Susan and Calum Craine (Disneyland Paris, Scrooge, Whistle Down The Wind, Jekyll and Hyde) as Michael with direction and musical direction by Simon Phillips.
Speaking about the production, the show's producer and company founder Luke Disley said:
"Being a huge musical theatre ‘geek’ myself, I’ve wanted to stage "tick, tick… BOOM!" for a long time. It was so brilliant to see the work brought to the big screen in 2021, enabling the show to reach a much wider audience. Everyone who knows and loves the Chester theatre scene will be aware of our director, Simon Phillips. Having worked with him many times over the years I’m looking forward to seeing what he creates from this outstanding piece of writing. Simon and I are incredibly lucky to have secured such a talented cast who have all worked professionally in musical theatre for many years, locally, across Europe and also in the West End. We can't wait to bring this iconic musical to Chester."
