The CWFL is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Blacon Youth Club legend Nicky Jones. Nicky dedicated countless years to the club, serving as a player, manager, and over recent years as groundsman. The playing surface at Blacon being so good that many have commented it being “the best around” this embodying his unwavering passion and commitment. Our thoughts are with Nicky’s family and friends during this difficult time.
The CWFL fixture list was once again heavily impacted by adverse weather, with only two games surviving in the Olympic Trophies Championship. These matches, however, proved pivotal in the race for the title, with Whitegate and Lache now emerging as the frontrunners. Whitegate made a statement on Saturday with a dominant 6-1 victory over FC Farndon. Tom Craney and Bobby Robbertson each bagged a brace, while Dan Ellwood and Sam Eves also found the net. FC Farndon’s sole consolation came via an own goal. Whitegate now lead the table on 41 points, although Lache, four points behind with two games in hand, remain firmly in control of their destiny. Lache also secured a commanding win, denting Waverton’s title aspirations in the process. Ben Barrett shone with a hat-trick, while Jord O’Brien and Keiye Williams added their names to the scoresheet. Stu Sheuber scored Waverton’s only goal.
Hoole Rangers progressed to the fourth round of the Northern Cup after a tense penalty shoot-out victory over Cheshire League side Pilkington FC U23. After 120 minutes of football failed to produce a winner, the tie was decided from the spot, where Hoole held their nerve to win 5-4.
Christleton FC delivered an impressive 4-1 win over Hoole Rovers in the CWFL Queensferry Premier Division. Cooper Nelson stole the show with a hat-trick, while Sam Tenwalde added a fourth to seal the points.
The Tarvin Precision Vets Division Two saw Birkenhead Vets claim a resounding 4-0 victory over Winsford Vets. Lee Gibson and James Atherton each scored twice, putting Birkenhead level on points with Winsford, although they remain third on goal difference. Great Float Vets continue to lead the division, maintaining a perfect record with five wins from five.
With several games postponed, attention turns to the open age league’s top marksmen: CWFL Queensferry Premier Division: Joe Williams (Upton JFC Reserves) leads with 13 goals, followed by teammate Aaron Rowland on 10. Godwin Nweze (Hoole Rangers) and Jay Hanson (Moreton FC) are tied for third with eight goals each.
CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship: Lache’s Warren Kelly leads the pack with an impressive 22 league goals. His teammates, Keiye Williams and Ben Barrett, along with Whitegate’s Tom Carney, follow on 15 goals each. Jack Pirie (Ellesmere Port U21) and Declan Jones (Waverton FC) are on 11 goals apiece, while Will Yardley (FC Farndon) has 10.
