Here are the latest results from the Chester and Wirral Football League...
The race for the CWFL Championship title is reaching its critical juncture, with Great Sutton Reserves and Higher Bebington Kelma Reserves locked in a compelling battle. Kelma applied pressure on the leaders with an action-packed 4-2 victory over FC Farndon. On a challenging pitch, both teams fought valiantly in a match that delivered everything, including a dismissal, two missed spot-kicks, and half a dozen goals. Kelma ultimately triumphed courtesy of finishes from Chris Corkhill, Eamon Buhalfaia, Shaunn Burgess, and Andy Noonan, while Andy Walker and Sam Daveport provided the replies for Farndon.
Kelma's win keeps them just two points adrift of Great Sutton Reserves, who endured a tense afternoon at home to bottom club Poulton Vics who put up an encouraging display. A solitary strike from Brad Thompson was just enough for Great Sutton to secure the points and maintain their lead at the summit. The title run-in remains finely poised, with the prospect of a potential title-deciding showdown with Great Sutton still having to travel to face Kelma.
Elsewhere, the Dee 106.3 League Cup quarter finals provided ample drama, with two of the three ties played requiring the lottery of a penalty shootout to determine a winner. Blacon Youth Club Reserves and Whitegate shared six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw during normal time. Ellis Moore's brace and a Taylor Owen goal accounted for Blacon's tally, matched by Whitegate's Sam Eves, Will Reid, and Matthew Cann. It was Blacon who held their nerve in the ensuing shootout, prevailing 5-4 to advance.
Meanwhile, Upton JFC Reserves and Handbridge remained inseparable after a tense ninety minutes ended goalless. Once again, it came down to penalties, with Upton demonstrating composure to win the shootout 5-4 and progress to the next round.
Rob Austin proved to be the hat-trick hero for Newton Athletic, whose three goals were enough to defeat Chester Nomads thirds by the odd goal in five. Tim Ashbrook and Macaulay Salter netted the consolation goals for Nomads in a competitive affair.
In the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division 3, Blacon Vets maintained their ruthless streak to make it seven wins from seven with a commanding 5-2 dismantling of Upton Vets. Warren Kelly spearheaded the charge with a clinical brace, while Danny Davies, James Henry, and Adam Cheers all weighed in to ensure the league leaders' perfect record remained intact. Upton’s resistance came via strikes from Tom Jones and Ryan Retter.
Frodsham Vets successfully maintained their grasp on second place following a narrow, hard-fought 2-1 victory against Tarvin Vets. Efforts from Ant Ollier and Ben Sherlock sealed the win for Frodsham, with Dave Taylor scoring Tarvin's lone goal.
At the opposite end of the table, Waverton Vets secured a decisive 7-3 win against Parkfield Vets. Charlie McDaid was the star of the show, netting a hat-trick, with further contributions coming from Rob Oakell, Chris Nicholson, and Rob Blakeney. For Parkfield, Kev Pink, Dave Ritson, and Danny McDowell all found the back of the net in an entertaining, high-scoring encounter.
In Division Four, Davenham Vets lost crucial ground in the title race after succumbing to a frustrating 3-2 defeat against a resolute Dee Rangers Vets side. Goals from Charlie Coats, Chris Sutter, and Calvin Owen secured a brilliant victory for Rangers.
Leaders Wirral Master Vets capitalised perfectly on their rivals' slip-up, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Hoole Rangers. Mike Richardson's solitary goal was enough to secure the points and open up a four-point cushion at the top.
Division Five witnessed the relentless march of runaway leaders Cheshire Viking Vets, who secured yet another three points with a 3-0 defeat of Taporley Vets. The usual suspects, Stuart Hardman and Michael Large, were once again on the scoresheet, while Jason Wylde completed the scoring to maintain the Vikings' perfect record of eight wins from eight starts.
Port Sunlight Vets maintained second position thanks to a 3-1 victory at Hoole Wanderers Vets. Joe Alkins led the way for Sunlight with a well-taken brace, and Mike McGree added a third, while Will Campbell netted Hoole's lone consolation goal.
