Here are the latest results from the Chester and Wirral Football League...
After the festive break, the CWFL returned at the weekend, albeit with a reduced programme largely due to the recent spell of poor weather. The Tarvin Precision Vets Division Five was the only section to complete a full set of fixtures and it produced plenty of goals.
Unbeaten leaders Cheshire Vikings Vets delivered the performance of the weekend as they swept aside Great Sutton Vets 14-1. Four separate hat-tricks were shared between Michael Large, Michael Shaw, Stuart Hardman and Jon Phomprett, with Jason Wylde and Jack Brookes also on target as the Vikings made it seven wins from seven and strengthened their grip on the Division Five title.
Saughall Vets also began the New Year in emphatic fashion, recording a 7-2 success over Frodsham Vets Reserves. Andy Bolton and Dan Coleman both struck twice, while Jimmy Smith, Dave Roberts and Lawrence Nixon added further goals. William Beales and Michael Evans replied for Frodsham.
St Annes Vets edged a nine-goal thriller against Hoole Wanderers Vets, claiming a 6-3 victory. Matty Edwards and Dan Fortune both netted braces, with Alan Craze and Steven Barnes also finding the target. Hoole’s response came through a double from Stephen Donoghue and a strike from Thomas Swinburn.
Port Sunlight Vets picked up a hard-earned 2-0 away win at Tarporley Vets, with goals from Andy Crilly and Mike McGee securing the points and consolidating second place in the table.
Division Three saw just the one fixture, as Frodsham Park Vets claimed a convincing 5-1 win over Parkfield Vets. Paul Travis, Kevin Griffiths, Andy Corness and Ste Salisbury were all on the scoresheet, along with an own goal, as Frodsham moved up to second place. Parkfield’s consolation came from Kevin Pnink.
In the Life Members Cup second round, Capenhurst Vets progressed with a 4-1 victory over Upton Vets. Tony Ashton, Luke Edwards, Matty Kavanagh and Mark Rowe were all on target for Capenhurst, while Ryan Retter replied for Upton.
Vineyard Vets and Hoole Rovers were locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes, with Jay Thompson and Dave Favager scoring for Vineyard and Sam Owen and Josh Price responding for Hoole. Vineyard then edged the penalty shoot-out 4-2 to book their place in the next round.
Attention now turns to the third round of the Life Members Cup, which begins on Friday evening under the lights at Shaftesbury, where holders Mersey Royal Vets entertain Division One leaders Birkenhead Vets in what promises to be a stern test. Saturday’s ties include the latest meeting between old rivals Capenhurst Vets and Higher Bebington Kelmas Vets, while Championship side Farndon host Premier Division outfit Handbridge. Elsewhere, Division Four’s Nags Head Bunbury Vets welcome Division Five high-flyers Cheshire Vikings Vets, and West Kirby Vets host Vineyard Vets. The rest of th third round weekend games below.
