Here are the latest results from the Chester and Wirral Football League...
The weekend’s action got off to a thrilling start in the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division One, as reigning champions Mersey Royal Vets faced off against newcomers Sefton Vets, who made the trip across the water.
Mike Burke gave the Royal an early lead just ten minutes in, his stunning 30-yard free-kick leaving the Sefton goalkeeper with no chance. Both sides had opportunities in a lively first half, but the score remained 1–0 at the break.
Early in the second half, the increasingly dangerous Karl Bergqvist brought Sefton level, beating his man down the right before somehow squeezing the ball home from the tightest of angles. Ten minutes later, Royal restored their lead when Dave Rudge found a yard of space and rifled a shot into the top corner from 15 yards out. But once again Sefton hit back, this time through Alex Bishop, who finished clinically from 12 yards after being played in.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, it was Royal captain Stuey Jones who had the final say, rising highest to head home a pinpoint Will Bulpin cross and seal all three points for the champions.
Also in action on Friday night were Clarence FC, who hosted Poulton Vics in the CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship. Clarence, looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat to leaders Higher Bebington Kelma Reserves, while Vics were still searching for their first win of the campaign.
Ben Ryan was the standout performer for Clarence helping himself to a hat-trick in a 6-2 victory. Troy Galer and Reno Robinson also found the net, while Zach Cotgrave and Aiden O’Brien replied for Poulton Vics with consolation goals
Just one fixture took place in the CWFL Queensferry Premier Division, where Handbridge moved to within a point of leaders Whitegate after a 3–1 win over Cestrian Alex. Tadgh Gregory netted twice, with Luke Simm also on the scoresheet. Mike Taylor grabbed the only goal for Cestrian.
In the CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship, Higher Bebington Kelma Reserves showed no signs of slowing down as they secured another victory, this time a 2–0 win over Elton JFC that moved them four points clear at the top. Jay Ashworth and Chris Corkhil got the goals.
Great Sutton Reserves enjoyed a 3–1 win over Chester Nomads 4th, with Brad Thomson, Josh Burgess and John Skipsey all on target. George Tingey scored the consolation for Nomads.
M.U.C. United were involved in another high-scoring affair, this time running out 7–2 winners against Sutton Rangers Reserves. Adam Hagger was once again in electric form, scoring four, while Ibrahim Hassan netted a brace and Keanou Reid also got in on the act.
In the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division Two, leaders Birkenhead Vets maintained their 100% start with a fourth win in four, defeating Hartford Vets away from home. Lee Gibson hit a hat-trick, with Chris Reilly and Jamie Edwards also scoring. Dan Bowen and Pete Wilson replied for the hosts.
Chester Nomads Vets edged out Eastham Vets 1–0 thanks to a solitary goal from Danny Andrews.
Elsewhere, West Kirby Vets looked to be cruising at 4–1 against Ellesmere Port Red Lions, with Sam Hill scoring a hat-trick and Danny Williams also on target. But the Lions roared back with a dramatic second-half comeback, led by Gray Davidson’s treble and further goals from James Hudson, Chris McCaffrey and Ben Powell to seal a remarkable turnaround.
