Moreton FC capped off a sensational week by completing a league and cup double following a dramatic title decider against reigning champions Waggon & Horses on Friday night. Having already lifted the CWFL Dee Radio 106.3 League Cup on Bank Holiday Monday (5 May) with a 2-0 win over Upton JFC Reserves — both goals coming from Danny Keogh — Moreton went into Friday’s clash (9th May) knowing a draw or win would be enough to seal the league title. For Waggon & Horses, only a win would do — three points would see them crowned champions and retain the title they won last season.
Moreton made the perfect start when Alfie Naylor fired them into an early lead. Waggon & Horses, however, were dealt a double blow before the break as they lost both their central defender and goalkeeper to injury. Despite that, they showed real character to turn the game around, with a brace from Harley Bennion and a strike from Aiden Field putting them 3-1 up before half-time — a score line that had the title heading back to Blacon.
The next goal would be crucial and despite a slow start Moreton responded and captain Jay Hanson pulled one back with a well-placed header before Manny Olaitan struck a dramatic equaliser with just five minutes remaining. The 3-3 draw was enough to crown Moreton CWFL Queensfery Sports Premier Division league champions. Credit goes to manager Jonathon White and Assistant Scott Neale and the entire squad for a memorable campaign Congratulations to Moreton FC.
Mersey Royal Vets rounded off an extraordinary season by completing a remarkable quadruple on Saturday. Having already secured the Vets Cheshire Cup, the CWFL Doug Johnson Vets Cup, and the CWFL Tarvin Precision Division 1 Vets title, they added the CWFL P2plant Life Members Open Age Trophy on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Kelsall FC. Goals from Anthony Cotgrave, Mike Burke and Robbo Courtenay sealed the deal.
