Here are the weekend results from the Chester and Wirral Football League...
Midweek action in the CWFL Queensferry Sports Premier Division saw Upton JFC Reserves and Chester Nomads thirds forced to settle for a point apiece in a hard-fought 1–1 draw. Jack Rowland found the net for Upton, while Cal Caulfield grabbed the equaliser for Nomads.
In the CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship, a bottom-of-the-table clash saw Sutton Rangers Reserves edge out Chester Nomads IV 2–1. Dan Smith and Ellis Pinkham were on target for Sutton, with Sam Harries scoring a consolation goal for Nomads. FC Farndon and AFC Waverton played out a lively 2–2 draw, with goals from Andrew Walker and Lee Parry for Farndon, and replies from Owen Hughes and Ruben Baldwin for Waverton. Meanwhile, West Kirby III made light work of Upton JFC III, running out 3–0 winners.
On Saturday in a solitary Premier Division fixture, Waggon & Horses dropped crucial points in their title charge, held to a 2–2 draw by Cestrian Alex. Aiden Field and Ellis Moore were on the scoresheet for Waggon, but a Mike McIntyre double stunned the title hopefuls.
CWFL P3plant Life Members Cup quarter-final action saw the impressive run of Cheshire Vikings Vets come to an end at the hands of Kelsall FC. Jason Wylde scored for the Vikings, but missed chances proved costly as a brace from Kieran Price sent Kelsall through to the semi-finals.
In the CWFL Doug Johnson Vets Cup, rivals Higher Bebington Kelma Vets and Capenhurst Vets met once more in the semi-final. Just as in January’s Cheshire Cup semi-final clash, it was Capenhurst who triumphed—this time with a narrower 2–1 victory. Goals from Ian Armstrong and Matty Earlam sealed the win, setting up a final showdown with Mersey Royal Vets in a repeat of the Vets Cheshire Cup Final to be played on Saturday 26th April 2025) at the home of Cammell Lairds (KRCT Stadium).
Great Float Vets took a significant step towards the Tarvin Precision Vets Division Two title with a dominant 6–2 win over West Kirby United Vets. Paul Ango and Paul Howell both bagged braces, with further goals from Robbie Bessell and To Carroll. Rob Phythian and Steve Jones netted consolations for West Kirby.
In Division Three, Hartford Vets extended their lead at the top to nine points with a convincing 4–1 win over Ellesmere Port Town Vets. Dan Bowen hit a hat-trick, with Mike Jones also scoring. Leigh Stokes responded for Town. Second-placed Tarvin Vets were dealt a heavy blow in their title hopes, suffering a 7–3 defeat to Parkfield Rangers Vets. Despite a brace from Adam Butcher and a goal from Dave Taylor, Tarvin couldn’t match Parkfield’s firepower, as Kevin Pink and Tony Langrell each struck twice, with Ian Mitchell, Trevor Vaughan, and Dave Woods also on the scoresheet.
The race for the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division Five title remains on a knife edge. Witton Albion Vets currently lead the pack after a crucial 3–1 victory over title challengers Poulton Athletic Vets, Goals from Gaz Boldsworth, Jamie McQueen and Scott Fullwood ensured Witton now sit three points clear, with a goal difference of +8. But the title race is far from over—West Kirby Vets, sitting fifth with three games in hand, can climb within a point of the leaders if they win their games in hand. Their 3–0 win over Great Sutton Vets, courtesy of goals from David Cowie, Justin MacDonald, and Richard Irvine, keeps their challenge very much alive. Cheshire Vikings Vets (4th) with two games in hand can also get to within three points of the leaders while Poulton Athletic who sit second are also in the hunt. Finally, in a high-scoring affair, Crossway Vets (3rd) saw Lee Coombes hit four and Kev Leech claim a hat-trick in a 7–3 win over Frodsham Park Reserves, In a win that also keeps alive their title chances.. Will Beales, Mike Merry-Jones, and Nick Foxon were on the scoresheet for Frodsham.
This Wednesday, 16th April, two eagerly anticipated CWFL P3plant Life Members Cup quarter-final ties are set to take place. Long time Premier Division leaders Moreton FC welcome CWFL Championship frontrunners Lache FC in what promises to be a thrilling encounter under the lights at Woodchurch Leisure Centre 3G, with an 8pm kick-off. Over at Vauxhall’s 3G pitch, Division Two outfit Ellesmere Port Red Lions Vets will look to cause an upset as they take on Division One side Higher Bebington Kelma Vets, kicking off at 7pm.
