A dramatic late turnaround, courtesy of goals from Pat Jones and Fin Roberts, earned Chester FC all three points at The Brewery Field last night.
The opening opportunity of the contest fell to Tom Peers but the number seven miscued from close-range after a fantastic drilled ball from P. Jones.
Spennymoor went close just a minute later, as Junior Mondal’s deflected effort looped off the base of the post, before the ball rebounded to Cam Salkeld who struck his shot into the side-netting.
P. Jones was a threat throughout the opening period and squared up Dan Jones once again just before the half-hour mark, but a trademark drilled cross flew through the six-yard box and rolled to safety.
Nathan Woodthorpe marauded up the left-hand side just after but his shot drifted wide of the post, before Tom Leak rattled the crossbar with a half-volleyed effort as the ball bounced to him eight yards out from goal.
Mondal had another inviting chance late in the half but his close-range effort was pushed away by George Murray-Jones, who looked composed in the away goal throughout the first half.
Corey McKeown was a threat down the left flank and almost grabbed the opener just after the interval but his drilled effort slid wide, before Mackenzie Heaney tested Murray-Jones with a flicked effort that was gathered by our shot-stopper.
The breakthrough arrived following the hour-mark for the home side, as Cam Salkeld’s looping effort flew into the far corner, giving Murray-Jones no chance in the visiting goal.
The Blues forced the Moors back after the opener, with waves of Chester pressure applied on the home back line, before the leveller eventually came with nine minutes remaining.
P. Jones and Declan Weeks delivered a clever short corner routine, before our number 18 found space and poked the ball into the far corner from an acute angle.
A well-derseved equaliser, and the turnaround was completed just two minutes later, as substitute Fin Roberts left his mark on the contest.
The forward grabbed hold of a loose ball inside the box and fired into the bottom corner, a superb finish that sealed three vital points on the road for the Blues.
The remainder of the clash was dealt with comfortably by Calum McIntyre’s side, who are back in action on Saturday with an away trip to Peterborough Sports.
