The curtain is set to rise at a Chester theatre on a production of a comedy which became an award-winning smash hit in the West End and on Broadway.
'One Man, Two Guvnors' by Richard Bean will be staged at Chester Little Theatre from Saturday 14 March - Saturday 21st March at 7.30pm. The play will be directed for Chester Little Theatre by Andy Fox-Hutchings.
An English adaptation of 'The Servant of Two Masters' (Il servitore di due padroni), a 1743 commedia dell'arte-style comedy play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, 'One Man, Two Guvnors' replaces the Italian period setting of the original with 1960s Brighton. The muti award-winning play opened at the National Theatre in 2011, followed by a UK tour before transferring to the West End. The play successfully opened on Broadway in 2012 with Gavin and Stacey star James Corden picking up a Tony Award for best actor in a leading role.
The play tells the story of Francis Henshall, who, having been fired from his skiffle band, becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from the dad of his fiancée. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who has been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Holed up at The Cricketers Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be reunited with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple, right?
Speaking about bringing the play to the stage at Chester Little Theatre, Andy Fox-Hutchings said:
"Everyone here at Chester Little Theatre is excited to be bringing the hit play 'One Man, Two Guvnors' to our stage this month. This is such a brilliant piece of comedy that takes one of the classic Italian grand comedies and brings the character, story and humour straight into the 21st century. The cast and crew have had a blast bringing it all together and we're confident that audiences will enjoy this madcap day in the life of Francis Henshall as he frantically tries to keep two very demanding Guvnors happy without being caught double-dipping."
