Appeal for witnesses following graffiti on Chester walls

Officers from the Cheshire Constabulary’s Rural Crime Team are appealing for witnesses and information after a section of the walls in Chester City have been graffitied.

On Monday 9th March, officers from Cheshire Constabulary’s Rural Crime Team were notified of reports that the historic walls in the city centre had been sprayed with graffiti.

The caller reported that they had seen four women spraying paint on the section of the wall near to the Cathedral and Northgate, which includes the King Charles Tower, at around 4.33pm.

As part of their investigation, officers are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to contact them.

Police Constable Jono Lightfoot, of the Rural Crime Team, said:

“The city walls are a Scheduled Monument and World Heritage site, this means it has very strict protections in law.

“Spraying paint like this on the historic fabric causes damage to the stone and It also costs a lot of money to remove.

“This type of incident is a Heritage Crime and will not be tolerated.”
