Access control barriers between Chester and Queensferry

In March 2023, a review was carried out of the existing access control barriers (i.e. the A-frame barriers) in place between Chester and Queensferry that were installed as part of the North Wales coastal path project.

The barriers were originally installed a number of years ago to prevent illegal vehicle access; however, the recent review was initiated in recognition that the barriers also restrict access for legitimate users, and a decision was made to instigate a phased approach for the removal of all A-frame access barriers along the coastal path.

Since March, a further review has taken place to assess all other access control barriers on the rest of the active travel network across Flintshire, including chicane barriers, York-style barriers, and bollard-type posts.  The review will now see the programmed removal and modification of any further barriers that no longer meet the required legislation.

Katie Wilby, Chief Officer for Streetscene and Transportation said:

“Whilst these barriers were installed to improve safety and prevent historical anti-social behaviour issues, we recognise that a large number of the barriers are of an outdated design and do not meet the Active Travel Act Guidance and the Equality duties, and therefore require removal or adjustment to enable access for all on these popular traffic free routes.”

Cllr Glyn Banks, Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Transportation said:

“It’s important that we ensure that all of our infrastructure supports a safer, more accessible, and inclusive walking, cycling and wheeling environment for all.”

It is anticipated that work to modify and remove the barriers will commence in August, the details of which will be publicised once confirmed.
