£271,000 of developer funding has enabled Cheshire West and Chester Council to carry out a major programme of improvements to parks and open spaces in Ellesmere Port.
The Section 106 developer funding is tied to a specific area. It has delivered significant upgrades at Netherpool Playing Fields, Westminster Park, Lime Street greenspace, and surrounding areas, creating safer, more accessible spaces that encourage physical activity, social interaction, and connection with nature.
At Netherpool Playing Fields a new drainage system and pitch surface renovations have been completed to Football Association standards. This will reduce the number of game cancellations caused by flooding or poor ground conditions.
A one kilometre fitness loop has also been created at the site with distance markers and directional signage to promote walking, jogging and outdoor exercise.
The network of paths across the playing fields have also been improved with new links to form a circular route, enhancing accessibility and security around changing facilities. Finally, vegetation clearance and path widening has made the space more welcoming and safer for all users.
At Wharfe Lane and Rossmore Park a new surfaced path creates links between local estates and the Rossmore Park Play Area, improving connectivity for residents. The addition of a wildlife zone circular path means walkers can now enjoy the meadow habitats on the site.
A fenced dog exercise zone has also been installed, providing a safe space for dog owners while maintaining visibility of children in the play area.
At New Grosvenor Road Playing Fields new fencing and pedestrian access points will protect the site from unauthorised vehicles and improve safety.
Similarly, at the Lime Street greenspace a robust vehicle barrier is being installed to deter encampments and safeguard the area for community use.
Following enquiries and feedback from residents, these improvements were shaped in collaboration with local ward members, who championed features such as the dog zone and the 1km fitness loop.
Cllr Stuart Bingham, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Neighbourhood Pride, said:
“Our parks and green spaces are vital for health and wellbeing. They provide opportunities for exercise, relaxation, and social connection, which are proven to reduce stress and improve physical and mental health. This investment ensures Ellesmere Port residents have safe, high-quality spaces to enjoy for years to come.”
Further enhancements, including additional drainage and habitat improvements at Netherpool, are scheduled for early next year.
