Match Report - Peterborough Sports 3 - 2 Chester FC

Chester fell to their first away defeat of the new season as they were edged out by the odd goal in five at The Bee Arena.

Calum McIntyre’s men had clawed their way back from two goals down to level, before a goal just after the hour mark proved to be decisive for Peterborough Sports.

The hosts got off to the best possible start when they took the lead on eight minutes. Blues ‘keeper Harry Tyrer initially showed tremendous reflexes to save Connor Kennedy’s header from point blank range, but Michael Gash was on hand to square the rebound for Jordan Nicholson to bundle it in.

Chester had two half chances following this as Jamie Morgan sent a shot straight into the arms of Pete Crook, before Darren Stephenson looped a header just wide with some appealing for a penalty.

Nevertheless, it was the Turbines who got a spot kick of their own on the half hour mark. Harrison Burke was adjudged to have fouled Kennedy, and Gash scored at the second attempt – the initial penalty being saved by Tyrer.

But the Seals never lack character. After the returning Adam Thomas was denied a goal by the offside flag, the second time proved the charm as he halved the deficit on the stroke of half time. The winger was picked out by an excellent Declan Weeks pass and turned home after being denied on the first occasion by Crook.

Moments after the break, the lively Kennedy poked an effort against the post, before the Blues levelled it up on 55 minutes. The Skipper Weeks picking up a loose ball inside the area and rifling into the top corner of the net.

A breathless encounter did have its winner though on 62 minutes as Nicholson scored his second of the match, the forward stabbed into the corner after good work in the build up by Gash and Kennedy.

The visitors pushed for another equaliser as Weeks curled a deep cross inches wide of the mark – before Burke couldn’t quite get a telling touch on sub Iwan Murray’s dangerous corner – as the home side clung on.

SUBS NOT USED: Dudley, Edwards.

SCORERS: Nicholson 8 & 62, Gash 29; Thomas 45, Weeks 55.
